The majority of the points raised on this blog have been looking primarily ethical issues within the world, but it is key to remember sustainable problems can be just as bad for the world we live in. One such example is the excessive use of Christmas lights which people use to decorate every inch of their house with.
Most would say Christmas is a special time of year which we should embrace and celebrate which is true to a certain extent but doe it go too far sometimes?
Yes children do find the whole fiasco exciting and a magical time of year, and yes the majority that put up Christmas lights are simply trying to bring a bit of cheer to the world. But on the other hand, the massive amount of energy consumption these lights use can cause a huge impact on the globe and contribute greatly to global warming.
Some solutions would be to utilise energy efficient festive bulbs and to put your lights on a timer so they are not on continuously throughout the night, which in winter is much longer than usual. Also people could opt for a zero-emission light show and use sustainable sources of energy to power their lights like solar or wind power.
