Mental health has become one of the most spoken about topics in recent years, however they are still not taken seriously within the workplace, but should they? Some argue mental disorders have a huge impact on our the lives of those who suffer from them, for some to the extent of not physically being able to live a normal life. For those who have never experienced any type of mental health it is extremely hard and near impossible for them to understand what that individual is going though, it is because of this companies do not have any empathy for these individuals and they tend to suffer even more so because of this.
So should mental health be treated as an illness? Should these individuals be given any extra attention and consideration within the workplace? On the other hand if we did allow special circumstances for mental health, would people just exploit this to get out of work? After all there is no physical test we can do to prove mental health as a problem so it may be easy for people to fake it. And quoted in an interview in The Guardian, mental health could be used "as a way of brushing aside indicators of social injustices" again suggesting people may exploit this to their own benefits.
If mental health could be diagnosed by a professional then these individuals should have every right to be treated as ill and companies should take this more seriously and provide that individual with the support they need.
