Talent shows have become a massive and popular source of entertainment in recent years, with the likes of X-factor and Britain's Got Talent reining in increasing viewing figures each and every year. But are these shows really all about the talent of the general public? Do they really provide hidden artists a chance at fame? Or is it just another show meant purely for the entertainment of its viewers?
A recent discussion about the process's of production within these shows spread some hidden light on the subject and it turns out prior to the auditions aired on TV, auditions to even feature on the show are held privately with the producers and crews working in the production. So why do we have people pursuing the wrong career still appear in the shows? Evidently it is not because they have an amazing talent so does that leave us with only one conclusion? Are these people being exploited and humiliated on purpose just to keep viewers entertained and interested in the show? Is this morally right?
It is clear this is not ethically a right way to make a show interesting and to think people can willingly make these decisions with no regrets is simply outrageous. But what can we do about it? Yes talent shows need viewers to be able to make the show, they need the money to fund the productions each year. But shows of this nature would still be interesting with just the raw and amazing talent they do come across, acts such as spellbound and diversity wow the audiences even more so than an accountant with no singing abilities, so why get rid of them? Countless acts have been removed straight away from the show just to be replaced by something awful but these acts they take away would make the competition so much more interesting and intense to watch.
