Lights Beyond Counting

It has become apparent and expected that entertainment shows such as Strictly Come Dancing use, and supposedly require, an extortionate amount of lighting for their stunning scenes and effects. Many believe these lights are necessary; they add to the entertainment and aesthetic value of the show. Also it is the producers and organisations making the shows who pay for the use of all the lighting, surely it is only fair they can use them?

On the contrary it is ethically and sustainably wrong these particular shows are allowed to consume this amount of energy, "roughly 4125ft. of LED lighting is used for the stage which is enough to run the length of more than 11 football pitches" according to an article found in The Telegraph. Considering the vast number of shows which also utilise a similar amount of energy there is a considerable amount of light pollution contributing towards an already problematic issue of global warming.
Solutions to this issue may involve utilising more economically friendly sources of power such as solar or wind. however the best option would be to reduce the number of unnecessary lights and find more sustainable alternatives to create an aesthetically pleasing show such as replacing background screens with solid patterned boards.
